History of Zeppelin Airships: In Germany, on July 2, 1900, the first Zeppelin Airship LZ 1 took to the sky from a floating raft on Lake Constance. Its inventor, Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin, had been exploring the concept of an airship since 1873, but only realized it after completing his military career. Emperor Wilhelm II's appointed committee of experts initially rejected Zeppelin’s plans due to security concerns, prompting him to seek alternative financing. In 1898, he founded a "Joint-stock Company for the Promotion of Aeronautics" with an initial capital of about 800,000 marks, half of which came from his private assets. The Württemberg King Wilhelm II supported him by providing 130,000 marks from a lottery, and the Reichs Government contributed an additional 50,000 marks, allowing the construction of a second airship, LZ 2. On August 4, 1908, LZ 4 was tested for its long distance flying suitability in a 24-hour flight, which was funded with a total of 6.25 million marks donated by the people. This led to the founding of Airship Company Zeppelin GmbH in 1908. Initially, military use of the airships took precedence, with 101 airships built for the military between 1909 and 1918. The airship LZ 129 Hindenburg made its first Atlantic crossing in March 1936, but on May 6, 1937, a catastrophe occurred during its landing in Lakehurst, NJ. The LZ 129 was completely destroyed by fire after an explosion on board, prompting the cessation of passenger transport using hydrogen airships. However, the use of helium was deemed too expensive and difficult to obtain, leading to the halt of airship construction in Germany.
