In 1898, The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company was founded, at a time when America was embracing the full force of the industrial revolution. Seeing the opportunity for expansion beyond tires, Goodyear ventured into the business of lighter-than-air balloons and aircraft. This decision led to the creation of one of America's most enduring corporate icons – the Goodyear blimp. Primarily utilized for advertising and capturing aerial views of live sporting events, the blimp was equipped with eaglevision, allowing it to display bright, multi-colored, animated words and images.

Although Goodyear was involved in the airship business prior to the construction of the Pilgrim in 1925, the latter is recognized as the company's first public relations blimp. 2015 marked the 90th year of continuous operation of the Goodyear airship program, the longest in history and undeniably the most successful.
